Profile of an Ideal Athletic Parent
Remember: always express your concerns in a calm and courteous manner. The time just before or after a contest or practice is not the time to have a discussion with a coach. Call and set up an appointment. The coach and/or his/her assistants are responsible to determine the amount of, if any, playing time an individual receives in a contest.
What if my child does not get to play?
Unlike little league, church league, or recreational programs your child may have been a part of and participated in before, high school athletics are competitive not only between teams but also between players. Unlike in church or rec league ball, we require all players to tryout and we also have “cuts” to determine the make-up of the team. Many young athletes have a hard time handling this type of pressure.
Parents always want what they think is best for their son or daughter. When a young person makes a team, there seems to be nothing more difficult than to watch his/her responsibilities relegated to the dugout. What should parents do when this situation occurs?
